Teaching ceramics is something I hold near and dear to my heart, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to be part of the artsPlace team. Canmore's community arts centre, artsPlace, is a welcoming, user-friendly space where Bow Valley residents and visitors can come to explore, discover, and celebrate the adventure of art and creativity through a variety of classes, workshops, camps, performances, films, and exhibits. The Canadian Mountain Arts Foundation, a registered charity, operates artsPlace independently of the Town of Canmore. Fundraisers like this are an important financial resource to keep prices of courses low.*
artsPlace provides low-cost, high-quality arts programming. Only 40% of the costs are covered by registration fees and ticket sales. Since its inception, the arts have been an integral part of Canmore's daily life. On September 24, 2015, Premier Rachel Notley cut the ribbon to officially open artsPlace, Canmore's new community arts centre, fulfilling many people's dreams. ArtsPlace, which was built by and for Canmore and the Bow Valley to serve our collective creative and community aspirations, has quickly established itself as a dynamic part of the identity as a livable community. The official opening was the culmination of many community members' hard work, and it was only the beginning.
During the pandemic's turbulent years, the Bow Valley community turned to the arts for solace, connection, and mental health. During the first month of the pandemic, over 27,000 people tuned in to watch over 80 different art and creativity videos or online concerts by local artists. When they were able to reopen to the public, limited in-person spots quickly filled as people brought with them a strong desire to connect through the arts, and they maintained their commitment to providing meaningful arts experiences virtually during lockdowns. I am thankful to teach ceramic courses throughout these times.
The Try It Out: Wheel Throwing! classes are some of my favourites to teach. I've been teaching wheel throwing for years, over half my life, and this particular course is magical because it's the one time when the person isn't focused on the end result, but rather on the experience of the process. It's a no-risk activity where people can enjoy the process and get a sense of what this particular aspect of creating ceramic pieces entails. I enjoy teaching it because people discover that it is not as simple as it appears. For more information on this course and more, check out here: https://artsplacecanmore.secure.force.com/ticket/#/
Finally, I'd like to thank artsPlace for providing so many opportunities for the community to celebrate and create art. Working with the organization is a lot of fun, and I'm excited about our future. Thank you for donating and contributing to places like this, which allow us all to continue creating art.
